Sonair
Sonair is a design object that focuses on my relationship with my mother, but also my relationship with my Asian American heritage. This object is a 3D printed soundwave of an interview with my mother about her immigration from Taiwan to Portland, Oregon. I put the audio files in Processing to get a .png, rotated the .png in Fusion 360, 3D printed the sound wave, and laser cut the acrylic plastic frame. In the interview, my mother describes her struggles of being an immigrant along with being marginalized and discriminated against for being an Asian Woman.
Collapsable Chair
A collapsable chair crafted using cut thick wood, dowels, fabric, and velcro. The color combinations and patterns reflect patterns my own Grandmother used in her life and home. Additionally, I wanted to create a backpack that could physically collect things and store the cushion, but along with this, it would also double as a collapsible low seated chair, which again references my Asian heritage.
Lux
Lux is an ambient lighting system designed to fundamentally change the experience of the daily NYC commuter. The project aims to take the current fluorescent lighting used by the MTA and replace it with sustainable and efficient LED lighting. By doing this, we want to change the peoples’ experience with the lighting. Instead of having harsh, bright lights, the LEDs would change color throughout the day with hues corresponding to the time of day, as well as acting as a visual alert system.
