Lux is an ambient lighting system —
designed to fundamentally change the experience of the daily NYC commuter. The project aims to take the current fluorescent lighting used by the MTA and replace it with sustainable and efficient LED lighting. By doing this, we want to change the peoples’ experience with the lighting. Instead of having harsh, bright lights, the LEDs would change color throughout the day with hues corresponding to the time of day, as well as acting as a visual alert system.
Lux aims to create comfort and delight through subtlety. Delight does not have to be something that is directly presented, but can come from one’s surroundings through the use of the subconscious mind. Usually when on the train, people prefer to tune out. Changes to one’s surroundings may go unnoticed, but will make a massive difference to the experience of a daily commuter. For those who do take their surrounding into account, it will be a spectacle of light, something interesting on the otherwise monotonous ride.
